The roll call was responded to with items of unusual in- terest. Among other things we learned that “Little Dorrit” still lives, and that Greenland was once a tropical country and that before many years it is believed we shall have the wire- less telephone as well as the telegraph. Congress gave the Child Labor question of “black eye” when they refused to have anything to do with it saying each state must settle that for itself. The Brownsville affair still occupies a prominent place in the papers, while the railroad situation is discouraged by all the magazines. Dr. Simpson a young English physician and lay missionary is in charge at Indian Harbor. Nine members & five visitors met in Mrs. Grey’s parlor March 8 for another delightful meeting of our Book Club. When the roll was called every one gave an Item of interest & several of our visitors favored us with one. After the reading of the minutes Miss Thompson gave us some interesting Cur- rent Events. Then the President called on Mrs. Martin to “extract” the opinions of the books. When this part of the programme is left to the close of the meeting the “pent up” ideas must have expression & a general “pow-wow” ends the discussion. For lack of time or for some other reason very few of the members had read their books. Mrs. Grey announced that “The Heretics” by Chesterton was her book but she really couldn’t get any thing out of it & & no one in the club has been able to read more than 2 or 3 chapters. It seems it is on the order of essays or discussions about different men & the author’s style is so obscure it is impossible to know what he</text>

Mrs. Smith read a selection from a chapter on the “Smiths” in which he says that the aristocratic name is one to be proud of & no Smith was ever a parvenu. Mrs. Martin gave a very interesting ac- count of Bernard Shaw to whom Chesterton devotes a chapter in his book. Shaw cer- tainly is peculiar to say the least. He is an Irishman by birth but lives in London now. For several years he was critic, dreaded by all who came under his harsh criticisms. He proclaims him- self an atheist, anarchist & vegetarian. In his opinion it is the depth of degradation to be rich, popular, & respected. He has be- come, rich by marrying an heiress & his plays have made him popular but his books prevent him from being respected. His works are one long attack upon all old institutions and the principles on which they are based. His view concerning mar- riage & morality are very extreme & he thinks</text>

In 1895 he married Miss Mabel Harlalsenden Hall of St. Louis & soon erected his handsome residence, Harlalsenden House, at Cornish, N.H. Churchill was not obliged to spend his life doing hack - work so could give as much time as was necessary to perfect any writing he undertook. While living in St. Louis he hired a room down sl. & would go to it every morning where he worker as if he were keeping books instead of writing a novel. Much to the regret of the Secretary she was late for the meeting of the Club on April 19th and failed to hear Miss Holt’s account of Sidney Lanier’s life & works. Miss Holt handed over the following notes – “It is marvelous what was accomplished in the short span of 39 years. Of these the most important milestones are his birth at Macon, Ga., Feb. 3, 1842, his graduation at eighteen years of age from Oglethorpe College; his enlistment in The Mason Volunteers in 1861; his service as a private & later as an officer under the Signal Service. Exposure at this period led to his decline in health. In 1867 he married Miss Mary Day of Macon. After a rather unsuccessful attempt at Law, in 1873 he moved to Baltimore & then his real work in Literature began. Previously “Tiger Lilies,” a novel, had been published. Then followed in rapid succession Poems, his two great works “The Science of English Verse,” “The</text>

He died Sept. 7, 1881 at Lynn, Pock Co., N.C. & his remains taken to Balti. His He has four sons, three of whom are now actively identified with publishing houses in New York City & one of whom bearing the name of his father is now living upon a farm in Georgia!! Miss Holt selected well chosen quotations from Lanier’s Poems which were given to each one present to read. Mrs. Price read extracts from some of Lanier’s letters, showing him as a letter - writer. They were so interesting it made us wish we could read them all. Mrs. Smith gave the musical Impressions of the Poet & much to the delight of all Mrs. Martin sang “Sunset,” words by Lanier & music by Dudley Buck.</text>

We have come to our last Book Club meet- ing of the year & it is with some regret when we think of it but we have the pleasure of looking back upon a de- lightful year’s work. On the afternoon of May 2nd all of the members with our visitors, Mrs. Frank Dupuy & Miss Luke, gathered in Mrs. Martin’s roomy parlor where spring flow- ers were in profusion – old scotch – narcissus, roses etc. After roll call & the reading of the min- utes we listened with pleasure to Miss Young’s paper on Current Events which she said had been prepared in true American style - quick. The thought passed through the retiring Secretary’s mind that Miss Young could write minutes so easily & well. The book for the aft. was Whistler & Others. The time was devoted to Whistler, beginning with a short biographical sketch which Mrs. Worth gave. We learned that</text>

Mrs. Martin told us some of Whistler’s characteristics which were many and peculiar. He was socially pleas- ant, even fascinating but hard & unsympathetic. He lost a good many of his friends by his un- reasonableness over little things. He was a genius, his etchings being recognized as unusually good. He believed in having a key to his work as in music & this musical feeling goes into all of his works. His mother’s portrait, one of his best, is a symphony in black & grey. It is said to be impossible to copy one of Whistler’s etchings. Mrs. W.R. Grey told of the influence Japanese art had exerted upon Whistler.</text>

Mrs. Price gave an account of the $50,000 gallery for the collection of Whistler’s works that Charles Freer of Chicago is to establish. It is to be next to the Smithsonian Institute & the “Peacock room” will be reproduced.</text>

Attractive in person pleasing in manner warm hearted in her attitude towards friends generous in offering her services in every good cause faithful in her duties as a teacher in the public School and in Sunday School. Appreciative of books and literature in general. She possessed in large measure the qualities and virtues that made her an exceptionally fine and esteemed and loved member of the Club. It is with genuine sorrow and with nothing but sweet memories of our friendship and intercourse with her that we here make this brief record of her life and her passing hence.</text>
